Pediatric Eye Exam

Pediatric eye exams are important, as they can detect any conditions or diseases early and preserve your child’s vision. At Global Eyes Optical in Freeport and Aranguez, we provide comprehensive eye exams to learn more about your child’s eye health and any necessary treatment that will help them see clearly. Before visiting us, learn more about these exams below:

Why Is a Pediatric Eye Exam Important?

Your child’s pediatrician likely provides a vision screening during their yearly appointments. Unless the doctor notices any issues, you might not think that an optometry appointment is necessary. However, this is not the case.

Vision screenings with the pediatrician only test visual acuity, which is how well your child can see objects at varying distances. While this is important, there is much more to vision than being able to read letters on a chart.

A comprehensive eye exam is more detailed. In addition to visual acuity, it checks for refractive errors, eye conditions, color blindness, eye tracking, and visual perceptive skills. These different skills, conditions, and errors can impact how well kids can learn and play sports.

When Should a Child Have Their First Pediatric Eye Exam?

It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at around six months old. After that, they will need another visit when they are between two and three years old. These exams are important, as they allow our optometrist to check for any signs of vision problems early and provide prompt treatment.

How Often Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?

For most children, an eye exam should occur once a year. If any issues are detected, our optometrist might recommend more frequent visits. We recommend that your child receives the exam before school begins each year, which can address any vision challenges or conditions that can impede your child’s learning. We also suggest scheduling additional appointments if you notice any of the following:

•             Complaining of frequent headaches

•             Rubbing their eyes or blinking excessively

•             Tilting their head to one side or covering one eye while they look at something

•             Difficulty reading or following along on paper
